The Spreydon Lodge bred Franco Edward was an impressive all-the-way winner of the $100,000 Group 1 2YO Pearl Classic (2,130m) at Gloucester Park on Friday evening.

The Kyle Harper trained and driven colt speared to the lead from barrier one and was never headed throughout, comfortably crossing the line 3.1m clear of the second place-getter Shockwave.

Franco Edward rated a smart 1:56.4 for the 2,130m event - just 0.5 of a second outside of Jack Mac's race record set last year.

The Robert Watson owned American Ideal youngster has now won three of his four race-day starts for earnings of $73,464 and is now likely to be targeted at the $125,000 Group 1 Golden Slipper in a month's time.

A $17,5000 purchase at the 2017 NZ Premier Yearling Sale, Franco Edward is the first foal out of Edinburgh Franco, an unraced Changeover half sister to multiple Group 1 winner Franco Emirate and recent Western Australian Listed winner Eden Franco.

An A Rocknroll Dance half brother to Franco Edward was purchased by the same connections at this year's NZ Premier Sale for $28,000.
